✍️ My Review
Reinterpreting a mythological epic to suit contemporary times can be a valid endeavour, as long as the filmmaker acknowledges the distinction between adaptation and distortion. Unfortunately, it appears that Om Raut fails to do so in the case of Adipurush. This cinematic portrayal of a segment of the Ramayana comes across as bloated and lacking substance, failing to do justice to the profound nature of the epic or its culturally significant characters.
The film's biggest problem is its tone. The film tries to be both a serious epic and a campy action movie, but it doesn't quite succeed at either. The result is a film that is neither entertaining nor thought-provoking. The film rushes through the Ramayana story, and it does not take the time to develop the characters or the relationships between them.
The film Adipurush heavily relies on computer imagery, with its makers putting in extensive efforts to saturate it with excessive visual effects. However, this artistic decision proves to be quite disappointing, particularly considering the subpar quality of the showcased visual effects. The visuals appear as if they have been taken directly from an overly vibrant drawing book of an overly-energetic child. As a result, the on-screen elements lack authenticity and fail to evoke a sense of believability.
While many said that the VFX was expected to be “bad", others are not impressed with the dialogues in the movie. They have examples like: “Teri bua ka bacha hai kya jo hawa khane chala aaya" (Is it your aunt’s garden that you’ve come to take a stroll) and “Kapda tere baap Ka… tel tere baap ka… Aag tere baap ki" (The cloth belongs to your father, so do the oil and the fire).
Is it appropriate to include a vulgar phrase like 'teri jali kya' (does it burn) in the context of the Ramayan, particularly during the scene when Hanuman's tail is set ablaze? Who is responsible for writing such dialogues? Why remove all traces of reverence in an attempt to cater, presumably, to a modern Indian audience? And most importantly, where is the sense of piety that should be inherent in this sacred scripture? Millions of Indians hold great admiration for the Ramayan, with its rich characters and captivating twists and turns. It stands as one of the greatest epics of all time. It is disheartening to witness its reduction to a superficial barrage lacking in genuine emotional depth.
The sound design of Adipurush is not only excessively loud but also disappointingly lacking in creativity. It fails to engage the audience and instead becomes an overwhelming and jarring aspect of the film. However, the sound design is just one among many aspects of Adipurush that can be described as haphazardly executed. The film as a whole exhibits a consistent level of negligence and carelessness.
This particular rendition of the Ramayan does not strive to evoke the profound religious sentiment that accompanies any reading of the revered scripture, be it the widely popular Tulsidas version or the original Valmiki version. Instead, it transforms the beloved epic into an actioner that bears resemblance to other fantasy epics like 'The Lord of the Rings'. It also draws inspiration from elements found in 'Game of Thrones' and numerous films featuring computer-generated armies engaging in epic battles.
The film completely mishandles a remarkable legend that has been an enduring source of inspiration for Indian storytelling, showcasing the victory of good over evil throughout the ages.

🔑 Key Points
- Adipurush, an adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana, was announced on 18 August 2020, via a promotional poster. Prabhas portrays Lord Rama under the direction of Om Raut who earlier helmed the period action film Tanhaji (2020).
- Om Raut was fascinated by the 1992 Japanese film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama and was motivated to adapt the Ramayana into a film using modern technology. Raut wrote the script amidst COVID-19 lockdown in India. Prabhas immediately liked the project and the production company T-Series Films was on-board for the project.
